Kids: Be careful around other people’s pets

Kids: Be careful around other people’s pets

These are excellent pet safety tips for kids to follow during holiday visits to friends

or family with pets. It's important to instill a sense of respect and understanding of

animals from a young age. Additionally, it helps create a safer environment for both
\
the children and the pets. Here's a brief summary of the do's and don'ts:

Do:

  1. Ask for permission:
  2. Always ask before petting or picking up a pet.
  3. Handle small animals carefully:
  4. Lift animals like rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils slowly and support them from underneath.
  5. Handle reptiles with care:
  6. When picking up iguanas, lizards, snakes, or other reptiles, do so slowly and wash hands afterward, as reptiles can carry bacteria.

Don't:

  1. Bother a pet while eating or sleeping:
  2. Give pets their space during these times.

  3. Tease or harm animals:
  4. Avoid teasing dogs or cats, pulling their tails or ears, or taking toys or bones away from them.

  5. Handle rabbits by their ears:
  6. Never pick up or hold a rabbit by its ears.

  7. Stick hands into fish tanks:
  8. Some fish may sting if disturbed.

  9. Approach sick or injured animals:
  10. Stay away and inform an adult who can help.

  11. Pet unfamiliar cats:
  12. Even if they seem friendly, it's best not to touch cats you don't know.

These guidelines not only ensure the safety and well-being of the children but also contribute to a positive interaction between kids and pets.
