Kids: Be careful around other people’s pets
Do:
- Ask for permission:
- Always ask before petting or picking up a pet.
- Handle small animals carefully:
- Lift animals like rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils slowly and support them from underneath.
- Handle reptiles with care:
- When picking up iguanas, lizards, snakes, or other reptiles, do so slowly and wash hands afterward, as reptiles can carry bacteria.
Don't:
- Bother a pet while eating or sleeping:
- Give pets their space during these times.
- Tease or harm animals:
- Avoid teasing dogs or cats, pulling their tails or ears, or taking toys or bones away from them.
- Handle rabbits by their ears:
- Never pick up or hold a rabbit by its ears.
- Stick hands into fish tanks:
- Some fish may sting if disturbed.
- Approach sick or injured animals:
- Stay away and inform an adult who can help.
- Pet unfamiliar cats:
- Even if they seem friendly, it's best not to touch cats you don't know.
These guidelines not only ensure the safety and well-being of the children but also contribute to a positive interaction between kids and pets.
